Overshot Baby Coverlet

In June 2022 I proposed two Overshot weave-alongs for the Pretoria Weavers Guild. You can read about the first one here. The second one is a Baby Coverlet from Handwoven Sep/Oct 2021.

I dyed the yarns I would need for the project in June, just before I travelled to Europe for a month.

I used navy 50/3 (similar to 8/2) for the warp and tabby weft, sett at 16epi.

My weft yarns were a 4-ply squishy yarn that we call Raw Cotton, dyed a red and a yellow that I mixed myself and a navy.

I also dyed some of the same 4-ply cotton using the dye residue from the first batch of colours by draping the skeins over the dye buckets to absorb the colour.

Once I got back from my European trip, I warped up the loom, sett at 16epi. I started weaving by sampling a slice of the pattern first, cut that off and washed it. I had achieved a good square weave with the beat I was using, so I was ready to start the actual coverlet.

Slice of the overshot pattern

I started weaving the first coverlet using the dyed navy, red and yellow 4-ply as pattern weft and the navy 50/3 for the tabby weft.

I had put on a 4.5m warp, with the idea to weave an extra coverlet. I used the variegated dyed 4-ply and tried to match up dyed 50/3 that I had in my stash to use as the tabby weft.

Variegated pattern weft

I still had some warp left, as well as weft, so I wove a hand towel using different variations of overshot treadling patterns.

This was a very satisfying weave, and I thoroughly enjoyed playing with all the beautiful colours!
