African Pot Backpack

This backpack is for DS as a belated birthday gift. DS liked the first backpack I made, so I offered to make one if she bought the cotton yarn to make it. Her choice of colours were black, white and grey. I gave her a couple of options for patterns, and of the 3 she selected, I chose this one – it makes me think of an African woven basket or clay pot.

Her birthday was at the end of September, but she will only get it at the end of November.

I often get asked how long it takes to make something – well this backpack took me a bit more than 2 months!

The main section of the backpack is done with 3 colours in Tapestry crochet technique, as well as a bit of normal crochet (in black) for the flap, and the straps are woven on the inkle loom. The backpack is lined with a piece of Malaysian batik fabric.

Here is a video of me weaving a section of the inkle band.

This is the band used as the straps for the backpack, with rucksack clips and nylon webbing for the attachments.
